The four sons Aymon and the horse Bayard

In spite of his load, Bayard tears along as quickly as the wind and crosses rivers and valleys of the single check. Escape continues to in the depths of the forest of Ardennes. The four sons of the duke Aymon, Renaud, Allard, Guichard and Richard find their cousin Maugis and tell him their sad adventure.
- We come from Paris. Charlemagne follows us, tells Renaud. The Emperor had finally made me knight but his nephew, jealous man, caused me during a game of chess. We quarrelled, I was angered and incidentally, I killed it. Without Bayard, we would perhaps be already hung!

Enchanter's talents of Maugis are acknowledged in all region. With her precious help, the brothers Aymon build the fortress of Montessor on a predominant rock Meuse. All take refuge there.

But the time does not attenuate the wish of Charlemagne's revenge. It manages to trap the sons Aymon by making them glisten peace. Encircled by the soldiers of the emperor, the four brothers would have died if Bayard had not intervened with hoofs and with bites.
Charlemagne is angry.
- That they besiege the castle! it howls to his men.
A terrifically long seat begins. In the fortress, the inhabitants die from hunger. The brothers have to drink the blood of Bayard, the only spared animal, not to perish. But while any hope seems lost, Renaud discovers miraculously a tunnel which allows them to run away again.
All these years of chase and battle influence the shoulders of the brothers and the knights of Charlemagne. So much so that the Emperor agrees finally to make an offer of peace. It will cease following the sons Aymon provided that the horse Bayard is delivered to him and provided that Renaud leaves in pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
With reluctance, Renaud accepts. Peace takes it on its attachment to the horse. It delays the setting to the king before leaving hold its commitments.
- This horse caused me enough faults! Tie him a millstone around the neck and throw it in Meuse! Charlemagne his men orders.
Bayard is thrown into the river and sinks into his depths. It struggles hopelessly. Of a violent blow of hoof, it manages finally to crack the millstone and to regain to the bank to run away in the forest of Ardennes.
Even today, they tell that they can see the wonderful horse and hear the hopeless neighing which it encourages not to can find his masters.
